Many patients begin taking statin or super-statin drugs like Crestor because they are worried about high cholesterol, which can contribute to other conditions such as heart disease. Because of this, it is especially concerning that the drug itself could contribute to a heart condition – called cardiomyopathy, the potentially deadly disease is characterized by weakening of the heart muscles. Other Crestor side effects have been noted and linked to Crestor, including muscle pain and weakness, muscle tenderness, and muscle wasting, also known as myopathy. Rhabdomyolysis is also a serious concern for Crestor users. It is a condition marked by rapid damage to muscle tissue, leading to damaged cells. These cells release a toxin into the bloodstream which has been known to cause kidney damage and kidney failure. Liver damage and diabetes have also been linked to the super-statin.
One theory as to why so many side effects manifest is that statins such as crestor inhibit the synthesis of a chemical that is necessary for cellular respiration and energy production. This chemical, called ubiquinone, is found in every muscle in the body – but is found in higher concentrations in skeletal and heart muscles because of their high energy requirements. There has not yet been enough evidence uncovered to definitively link statins like Crestor to the adverse side effects caused by inhibition of uniquinone, but it looks like a definitive link will me made sometime in the future. In the meantime, those who have suffered from Crestor side effects should consult with an experienced Crestor lawyer as quickly as possible to increase their chances of winning damages.
Crestor is both more potent and more effective than other super-statin drugs that are on the market today, including Zocor, Lipitor, and Pravachol. Although these drugs, because they are so similar, come with a very similar range of side effects to Crestor, the only side effects thus far acknowledged seriously by the Food and Drug Administration are those associated with Zocor. The FDA distributed a press release recently advising doctors not to prescribe the highest 80 mg dose of Zocor to patients due to the high risk of side effects. The potency of the drug is thought to lead to a much higher occurrence of side effects.
Patients who are taking an 80 mg dose of Zocor or who are experiencing any of the statin side effects should consult a physician before self-diagnosing or changing their medication consumption. Also, victims suffering from the adverse effects of Crestory are advised to consult a legal expert to pursue filing a Crestor lawsuit.
